Cut the Chatter, Red Two: Hot Wheels Announces X-Wing Carship Toy

Star Wars Carships

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, before Hasbro revived the GI Joe franchise, and before Go-Bots, Transformers, and Robotech toys arrived on the scene, the hot action on the playground invariably involved Tonka trucks, Hot Wheels, and Star Wars toys. So upon the announcement of the Hot Wheels X-Wing Carship, those of us of a certain age will proclaim that two out of three most definitely is not a bad thing.

For San Diego Comic-Con, Hot Wheels has gone large, following in the footsteps of its Darth Vader car by building a full-size working automobile that resembles a New Hope-era Incom T-65 X-Wing fighter. Naturally, a toy version goes along with that. Mattel claims that the new die-cast X-Wing Carship will be one its fastest toys ever on the vaunted orange Hot Wheels track.

But if playing Wedge Antilles at the Joie Chitwood Thrill Show doesn’t do it for you, Mattel has also announced a special box set featuring an X-Wing Carship, plus two more inspired by Joe Average Imperial TIE Fighters, and one that recalls Darth Vader’s special-sauce TIE Advanced x1 from Episode 4. All four vehicles are equipped with LEDs to simulate blaster fire during  re-enactments of the trench run on the first Death Star.

Alternately, you could do what we had a tendency to do when we were young: Scrape all the paint off your cars by rubbing vigorously on concrete, apply a new livery with mom’s nail polish, then blow the suckers up with firecrackers down by the creek. It’s your choice, really.
