Orange is The New Block. The 600 Block of North Wells

640 North Wells

Orange you glad we captured some photos of the construction at 640 North Wells?

In an apparent effort to stave off the remote possibility of a scurvy outbreak in the River North neighborhood, crews have slathered the new 640 North Wells site in orange. And it is nothing if not extremely colorful.

Lend Lease Construction has been busily erecting JDL Development‘s 23-story rental community on this site. Designed by Chicago firm Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, 640 North Wells will provide River North with 251 apartments and 12,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space when it opens in 2017.

Surely it’s mere coincidence that there happens to be a gargantuan poster of newly-hired University of Illinois football coach Lovie Smith towering above the construction site, proclaiming “HAIL to the ORANGE.” I mean, no one could have been that forward-thinking, right?

Right?

A rendering from Hartshorne Plunkard of the finished project is far less…orangey.
