Get In Line: 7000 People Have Already Applied to Buy the First 500 Ford GTs

2017 Ford GT

The application process for the new Ford GT supercar is still open for another three weeks, but the odds of securing one for your garage grow slimmer by the minute. Just one week after it launched the online system, Ford has already received 7000 applications. It plans to build only 500 of the cars during the initial two-year production run.

Those 7000 people are probably hoping that not too many others fill out the lengthy application before Ford closes the books on May 12 (or May 24 in China, Macau, and the Philippines). After that, Ford’s mysterious panel of judges will have 90 days to decide who will be among the lucky few permitted to shell out around $450,000 to get one of the GTs.

While Ford opened up the GT configurator to the public to play around with, the main purpose of the build-your-own tool was to allow potential owners to select their preferred options to submit with their applications. Of the 7000 builds submitted, Liquid Blue was the most popular color—no surprise considering that’s the hue that made such an impression when the GT debuted at the 2015 Detroit auto show—and Matte Black was the runner-up.

If you’re still not deterred by the long odds and the car’s high price, feel free to head to FordGT.com and make your case for why you should be among that enviable group of Ford GT owners.
