Bugatti Has Sold the First 200 Chirons

At least 200 people will wake up to a new Bugatti Chiron in the driveway in the next few months. That’s how many orders Bugatti has taken worldwide through this week, the company announced when revealing a “near-production” example at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering in California.

That event marks the North American unveiling of a car Bugatti already displayed at the Geneva auto show earlier this year and then at every venue where the monied elite gather in sufficient numbers. Of course, the reported “sales” of these ultra-exotics can and do vary. Some buyers may have ordered more than one car, while several may back out after laying down their €200,000 deposits ($226,000) due to a divorce, court order, or simply because a Ford GT may arrive sooner. You never know. At least we’ll never know, because we’re not on that list.

In total, Bugatti plans to sell 500 copies of the 1500-horsepower Chiron, for which it claims a top speed of 261 mph. It’s unclear whether that run of 500 includes the numerous special editions we expect will show up to keep the car in the public spotlight and bid for a few more gold bars from people who clearly don’t need to ask about the $2.7-million base price.

Bugatti expects about 30 percent of the supercars will be sold to buyers in the United States. There’s a good chance many of them were among those swallowing the free champagne at The Quail.
