Wrigleyville’s Embattled Boutique Bunkhouse Bounces Back as Hipster Hotel

3469 North Clark Street is the location of a proposed small boutique hotel that’s brought the Wrigleyville neighborhood lots of drama. Money woes and bankruptcy courts have left the place in limbo.

Now it appears that work is ready to start again.

A developer by the name of MR Clark 3473 Operating LLC is asking the city for permission to start construction. MR Clark uses the same toothbrush as Horizon Realty Group. Horizon has a sackful of mid-sized residential buildings scattered around Chicago’s more happening north side neighborhoods.

According to documents filed with the city late last week, the shingle outside the new place will read “Holiday Jones.” This will be the third location for Chicago’s home-grown hipster hostel chain, but will deviate in that it will be a regular hotel, not a hostel.

The company has a hostel in East Ukrainian Village at 1659 West Division, where it transformed an S.R.O. into the kind of lodging that appeals to 20-somethings who like to dress like people who actually have to live in S.R.O.’s, but call their costumes “ironic” instead of “survival.”

Another location at 2014 West Wabansia Avenue in Bucktown goes by the name Urban Holiday Lofts, but it’s the same crowd who sold their CD collection at the record store to buy iPods, then sold their iPods on eBay to buy records. It’s the cycle of life.

The plan is to renovate the four-story building at 3469, and build a new five-story addition in the empty lot next door. Combined they will have 53 hotel rooms, plus ground floor and basement retail space. In keeping with the indigenous lifestyle, there will be a roof deck.
