In April of this year, plans were unveiled to replace the art moderne/brutalist National Letter Carriers Association building at 1411 South Michigan Avenue with a 15-story high rise. At the event, hosted by third ward Alderman Pat Dowell, developer Russland Capital Group detailed a plan that would see 199 residences built above a medical facility. We now know more about that medical facility.
Rush University Medical Center has announced that it is going to build an outpatient health center in the new building, fulfilling the promise of a medical facility. Hospitals in Illinois have to jump through a lot of hoops in order to open a new facility, and the first step is to file a “certificate of need” with the state. That’s happened, but is a lengthy bureaucratic process. Because of that, even though the building is expected to start construction this summer, and be completed next year, the medical portion won’t be able to open until 2018.

Rush Planning Health Center in South Loop
Outpatient center set to open in 2018 on South Michigan Avenue
Rush University Medical Center has filed a certificate of need application with the state of Illinois to build an outpatient health center within a new 15-story, mixed-used residential development in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood. The developer, Russland Capital Group – South Loop, LLC, plans to break ground this summer.
The South Loop neighborhood center at 1411 S. Michigan Avenue is part of Rush’s long-term plans to offer more locations and easier access to Rush health care providers throughout the Chicago area.
“We want to make it as convenient as possible for people living and working in the South Loop neighborhood to see their Rush affiliated health care providers,” said Michael Dandorph, Rush executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Pending approval of the certificate of need, the Rush outpatient health center would open in the summer of 2018 and occupy part of the first, fourth and fifth floors. Rush anticipates that the center would be staffed by health care providers representing primary care (internal medicine and family medicine), obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterolog and rheumatology. Rush already has begun the planning and design phase for the new facility and will begin to build out the space in the summer of 2017.
“The practice will be designed around what patients have told us they wanted, in a convenient neighborhood location that will allow Rush to provide care when and where people need it,” said Dandorph. “Weekend and after-hours visits and immediate care also will be available.”
The design of the practice site will foster efficient and effective communication among the health care team to promote coordinated care, with the patient and his or her family always at the center of all discussions and decisions.
In April, Rush opened Rush River North at the Grand Plaza apartment building at 539 N. Dearborn St. Physicians from Rush currently practice at a number of other locations throughout the Chicago area, including the following:

Chicago, Lincoln Park: Rush University Physicians at Lincoln Park, 2835 N. Sheffield St.

“This and other sites will complement and help us improve the health of those who have come to trust Rush for their health care needs at our near west side campus and other locations,” Dandorph said.
