We don’t normally write about traffic in this blog, preferring to leave that up to morning news redheads in helicopters. But what just happened on Wabash Avenue deserves a special mention.
That’s because it’s part of the construction of the new $75 million CTA Washington/Wabash Station. CDOT has just closed Wabash Avenue between Madison and Monroe Streets for ten weeks. That’s until almost the end of September, if you don’t have a calendar handy.
The Washington/Wabash Station completes the CTA’s goal of having just two stations on each of the north, east, south, and west legs of The Loop. It will replace the already closed Madison/Wabash station and the still-operating-for-now Randolph/Washington Station.
The work being done that necessitates such a big street closure is a word salad of construction goodness. From 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly’s newsletter:
This closure is needed to facilitate the installation of earth retention systems at 4 support columns along Wabash, the erection of shoring systems to support the train tracks, the demolition of existing CTA foundations, the pouring of new foundations, drilling and grout micropiles work on the columns, and to complete associated track work.
For those of you tired of dodging construction in the east Loop, you should know that the original “2016” completion date is now “Spring 2017.” Until then, enjoy the images below.
