Volvo Introduces “Polestar Optimization” Performance Packages for S90, V90

Volvo’s performance division, Polestar, has announced that the same “optimization packages” introduced last year for the automaker’s Drive-E four-cylinder engines will be available on the new S90 sedan and V90 wagon. Of course, both new Volvos use Drive-E engines, so it’d be easy to port over existing upgrades, but we’re happy to see performance boosters on the roster for the large Volvos nonetheless.

So far, Volvo isn’t talking specifics when it comes to the optimization packages’ specific power boosts, but the existing package for the current XC90 T6 bumps output from 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to 330 horsepower and 325 lb-ft. As with the packages for other four-cylinder Drive-E engines, the focus is on total drivetrain transformation, not maximum output. Throttle response and transmission shift protocols are tweaked in addition to “overall engine performance.”

The packages will first be available on Euro-market D5 diesel S90 and V90 models but later will spread to gas-powered T6 variants. We’ve reached out to Volvo for confirmation that the Polestar kits will be available in the U.S., but based on the kits’ availability here for the XC90, S60, V60, and XC60, we’re thinking the answer will be yes. The company says the Polestar package for the T6 will be available in Europe starting in October; that car goes on sale here in September. As for full-blown, Polestar-badged versions of the S90 and V90 along the lines of the S60 and V60 Polestar models? We’re still waiting for the final answer on those . . .
