To (Silently) Protect and to (Electrically) Serve: 100 BMW i3 EVs Join LAPD

BMW i3 police car

The Los Angeles Police Department has been recruiting within the EV community and has just announced that 100 BMW i3 electric vehicles will join its fleet. The i3 is the LAPD’s first EV; BMW beat out Tesla for the high-visibility opportunity.

The i3 purchase is part of an initiative by the city of Los Angeles to make 80 percent of all its municipal vehicles EVs by 2025. Since these are the police department’s first EVs, the order also includes 100 Level 2 chargers and four DC fast chargers to help keep the i3s charged up and on the road.

On the road, however, is not to say these EVs will be running down perps or racing to respond to 911 calls. The i3s will be used for non-emergency duties only. For that more intense stuff, the Model S might have been the better choice. For now, a lot of LAPD patrol cars are still Ford Crown Victorias, although more recent additions include Ford Police Interceptor utilities and sedans and a bunch of Chargers—the upper-case “C” variety that Dodge makes, not the kind EVs plug in to overnight.
