2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Is Really, Really, Yellow

The refreshed 2017 Subaru BRZ’s outward changes may not be immediately apparent to the casual viewer—they are, in fact, rather comprehensive—so it makes sense that Subaru chose to emblazon its latest special-edition BRZ with an eye-catching color scheme. In keeping with Subaru’s color-based naming strategy for past limited-production BRZ variants (Series.Hyperblue, or its less-blue predecessor, the Series.Blue), the yellow BRZ is named Series.Yellow.

The bright and sunny BRZ borrows more than its period-centric naming convention from the Series.Hyperblue—it is more or less a Series.Hyperblue with all of the blue-colored accents inside and out replaced with yellow ones. There’s the paint, of course, as well as yellow contrast stitching and bits of yellow cloth throughout the otherwise black cabin, and black-painted 17-inch wheels.

Unlike the Series.Hyperblue, there are upgrades to the brakes—Brembo rotors and four-piston calipers up front—and the suspension, which gains Sachs dampers. (Those dampers, by the way, replace the updated units standard on every 2017 BRZ.) On the whole, the package is compelling, so long as you dig the color yellow. We’d say that the interior teeters on the edge of acceptability when it comes to the yellow-ized components in there, but again, if you like the color . . .

Subaru is hoping 500 customers like the color, as that’s the total number of Series.Yellow BRZs that will be built. Pricing is still to come, but expect it to fall close to the $30,000 mark.
