Lots of TV shows use the cities they’re set in as a kind of supporting actor that adds color and depth to the production. If it’s a situation comedy, the cities are celebrated for being wonderful places for fun and family (Full House, Laverne & Shirley). If it’s a cop drama, the city can be moody and interesting (Dragnet, Hill Street Blues).
And then there’s Lady Blue. It’s a cop drama. But even for a cop drama, it’s depressing. I can’t think of a TV series opening that has made Chicago look worse. Check out the video above, which makes Chicago appear to be an endless grey maze of fog and snow banks.
Fortunately, Lady Blue ran for just 13 episodes from September, 1985 to February, 1986 on ABC. You probably never heard of it because like 90% of the country, you were watching Cheers and Night Court on NBC instead. According to Wikipedia, it was considered one of the most violent TV shows of its day.
Interestingly, even though it was a failure here in the States, it proved to be a big hit in Brazil. Go figure.
