GM Recalls 4800 Full-Size Trucks for Suspension Failures

General Motors is recalling 4789 full-size SUVs and pickup trucks for suspension failures, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The front upper control arms may have “inadequate welds” near the bushing that may cause the arms to bend or break off, which can compromise steering and handling. The 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Sierra 1500, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and 2016–2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are all affected. GM said it found the problem on April 5 when a Yukon XL’s front left wheel cambered beyond its normal limits during an assembly line test. Days later, GM ran a driving test and found the defect would make the truck “very difficult to drive even at low speeds.” The control arm can fail at any speed, including when steering or braking, GM said.

Dealers will replace both front control arms and perform a realignment, both at a later date. Vehicles built after April 8 were shipped with an improved  control arm setup. Last month, GM recalled 895,000 late-model full-size pickups for seat belt defects and in February recalled 426,000 late-model heavy-duty pickups for faulty brake pedals.
