Cash-Strapped, Half-Empty CPS Will Build a New School in the South Loop

South Loop - Chicago, Illinois - February, 2010 - 001a

Somewhere in the South Loop, a new school will soon spring up.

The Chicago Public Schools system faces  a billion dollar deficit, and has endured multiple rounds of layoffs and school closings over the last few years as the city’s population decreases.  But none of that is stopping Mayor Rahm Emanuel from promising a select group of citizens that new schools are coming to their neighborhoods.

WBEZ radio has gotten its hands on a list of 16 new schools hizzonor plans to put up around the city, likely in those few mostly downtown neighborhoods where children outstrip capacity.  But the radio station has chosen to spill the beans on only one: South Loop.

‘BEZ says the new school will handle 1,200 students and take at least two years to open.

Right now more than half of CPS schools are “underutilized.”  But that’s not true for downtown, where from the South Loop to Lakeshore East to Old Town, people have been clamoring for new elementary and high schools for years.

You can read the full WBEZ report here.
