BMW Set to Upgrade M235i with More Power, New M240i Moniker

2014 BMW M235i coupe

One of our favorite current BMW models, the six-cylinder M235i coupe and its convertible sibling, is reportedly due to receive a neat upgrade and as soon as this summer, at least in Europe. According to BMW Blog, the M235i will follow in the footsteps of its older cousin, the 3-series—the six-cylinder version of which received a 15-hp bump this year by way of an all-new turbocharged inline-six engine—and get both an increase in power from BMW’s newest inline-six and a name change to go along with it.

Previously, the M235i and the 335i shared an older 3.0-liter inline-six. The 3-series switched to an all-new 3.0-liter inline-six that debuted for 2016 and coincided with a name change from 335i to 340i; it’s expected that BMW will rechristen the M235i coupe and convertible “M240i” when they adopt this same engine for the 2017 model year. Assuming the new six lands in the 2-series in the same state of tune, we can look forward to the small coupe and convertible enjoying 340 horsepower, a 15-hp upgrade over today’s model.

Sources at BMW North America were unavailable for comment, but this development is hardly unexpected. If it comes to fruition, it’s good news for those who can’t quite swing the new M2—and it should keep us smitten with one of our reigning 10Best cars.
