8 East Huron is About to Become a Thing

Early this year we told you about a pair of vintage Chicago walk-ups that were about to bite the dust.  The dust has since been bitten and 8 East Huron is ready to rise in their place.

Rendering of 2 East Huron8 East Huron is at the corner of State and Huron, a block south of Holy Name Cathedral.  It is a 26-story residential block replacing a pair of buildings erected in 1889.  And it just got a crisp new building permit from the city of Chicago:

NEW CONSTRUCTION OF A 26 STORY APARTMENT BUILDING (52 EFFICIENCY UNITS AND 53 DWELLING UNITS) WITH 1ST FLOOR RETAIL ; 31 PARKING SPACES ON LEVELS 2-4 (8 EAST HURON STREET)

Eight East Huron is a project by CA Ventures, designed by Valero Dewalt Train Associates.  It should max out around 300 feet (290 to the roof + mechanical), which is pretty good considering the tiny footprint it has to work with.  It’s a footprint so small that some of the caissons actually intrude ever-so-slightly upon the dirt underneath the public sidewalk.  Yep, they’re paying the city rent for that.
