If you watch Chicago Tonight on WTTW (and if you don’t, why the heck not?), then you’re familiar with Geoffrey Baer — the likable history nerd who digs through archives across Chicagoland to find the answers to questions big and small.
You may also remember him as the face of the recent WTTW production 10 Buildings That Changed America a few years ago. Now he has a new gig, fronting three extensions of that program, the first of which airs tonight.
10 Homes that Changed America takes a look at residences, great and humble, that had an impact on the development trajectory of our nation. We don’t have any insight into exactly what’s on the list, but the promo (above) shows some completely cliché entries like Marina City and Fallingwater, but also some delights like an adobe apartment building and the Gamble House in Pasadena, California, better known as Doc Brown’s 1955 house in Back to the Future.

Tonight’s show is the first of three new programs in the “10” series. The next one is called 10 Parks That Changed America, which airs next Tuesday, April 12. The third is 10 Towns That Changed America, and airs April 19.
Disclosure: The producer of this series, Dan Protess, contacted me for advice about this series a while ago. And while I responded with a long, rambling e-mail about important homes and parks and such, I never heard from him again, so chances are none of my recommendations were included.
