Godzilla Stirs: Updated Nissan GT-R Debuts Next Week

2017NYIASNissanTeaser-2

Nissan has a history of making constant tweaks to its legendary GT-R, and we’ll see the latest update at the upcoming New York auto show next week. If the minor updates that have come before it are any guide, the 2017 Nissan GT-R is likely to gain a bit more power, along with some visual tweaks and slight tuning changes.

The 2016 GT-R currently makes 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft of torque from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, while the Nismo variant introduced for 2016 bumps those numbers up to 600 ponies and 481 lb-ft. Although it doesn’t really need any extra power—we tested a GT-R Nismo in 2014 that got from 0-6o mph in a scant 2.9 seconds—we still might see a slight increase; the most recent power uptick for the 2013 model saw the VR38DETT engine gain 15 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque.

The R35-generation GT-R has been around for a while now, having made its U.S. debut way back in 2008. Don’t get too excited about the R36 quite yet, because current rumors say that it won’t arrive until 2018. When it does, expect it to use an advanced hybrid powertrain and look something like Nissan’s 2020 Vision Gran Turismo concept. Until then, stay tuned to see what Nissan has in store for the current-generation GT-R when it shares full details on March 23th.
