Chevrolet Previews New Supercharged Camaro ZL1 Through the “Flowtie”

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Looking glasses are for Alice to look through on one of her LSD-driven daydreams. In previewing its 2017 Camaro ZL1, Chevrolet chose to transport viewers in a manner more befitting a high-performance, supercharged Camaro variant, giving us a peek at the car through the flowtie. (That’d be the open, bow-tie-shaped grille badge that actually served an aerodynamic purpose on the outgoing Camaro Z/28.) The preview takes the form of a video of the ZL1 accelerating through several gears on what appears to be the Spring Mountain race track outside of Las Vegas, a video shot from behind the flowtie looking forward down the track.

The only trouble with Chevy’s improvised Through the Flowtie movie? We can’t see the ZL1, we can only hear it. Still, the audio carries the unmistakable sounds of Chevrolet’s small-block V-8 rippling to redline through a few gears, overlaid with the signature whining noise of a supercharger. It’s great music—and you can listen to it in the video we’ve embedded below—but beyond aural pleasure it also offers a few clues of what to expect from the latest ZL1.

First up, based on the video, the next ZL1 will once again be available with an automatic transmission—but this one has more gears (the old ZL1 used a six-speed automatic), as evidenced by the video’s depiction of at least five (quick, tightly spaced) upshifts over a roughly 10-second acceleration pull from nearly a stop. Assuming the new ZL1 takes longer than 10 seconds to reach its top speed, there would seem to be more gears in the transmission we didn’t hear the car run through. Either way, look for full details on the yet-mightiest sixth-generation Camaro to be revealed on March 16th, as hinted at by Chevrolet in the video.
