A new skyscraper proposed for the South Loop’s Wabash corridor is getting taller before it’s even started.
At a meeting tonight hosted by third ward alderman Pat Dowell, a revised design for 1326 South Wabash was revealed. Visually, there’s not much different. But a couple of important bits have changed.
First, much to the delight of hard-core skyscraper enthusiasts, the SCB-designed building’s height has increased to 515 feet. When it was originally introduced last September it was 17 feet shorter.
The building will have 500 residences, and 239 parking spaces. A reduction of one parking space from the original design.
Also changed is how the parking garage is accessed. The entrance has been moved to an alley, instead of the street, a move aimed at reducing congestion, especially for through traffic.
Garage placement is going to continue to be an important issue in the design of South Loop skyscrapers for the next few years as the neighborhood goes through the growing pains of becoming a truly urban space. Paltry transit options and an abundance of parking spaces give the illusion that it’s a good place to own a car. But that reality is rapidly changing as streets fill up and lots disappear.
