Chicago Plan Commission Approves Assumption Catholic Church Project

311 West Illinois

The 23-story, 245-unit “3Eleven” apartment tower goes here, on the east end of the 300 block of West Illinois Street.

Thursday, the Chicago Plan Commission gave its approval for a multi-dimensional project involving the Assumption Catholic Church and grounds at 311 West Illinois Street.

The big addition to the neighborhood would be 3Eleven, a 23-story apartment tower designed by friends-of-the-blog FitzGerald Associates, in what is now a surface parking lot on the southwest corner of Illinois and Franklin Streets. Developer John Buck Company wants to put 245 units in the tower, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. There will also be ground-level retail space, and 109 parking spaces included with the tower.

The existing priory at Illinois and Orleans will get an additional story.

On the other side of the church, which isn’t going anywhere, a one-story addition will be added to the existing priory by the Order of Friar Servants. McBride Kelley Brauer Architects is handing the priory expansion. MKB is the firm behind the 4-level addition to The Moody Church in Old Town.
