Slice of Life: Rookie Reporter Fooled By Non-Pool

The Parker Fulton Market

We’ve watched The Parker Fulton Market (171 North Halsted Street) grow from our perch atop the Chicago Architecture West Loop bureau for months now. We saw the glass go up; we saw the tower crane come down.

But just because it can be seen from here doesn’t mean we shouldn’t see it from there. It’s a quick walk over to North Halsted, so the decision was made to venture over to the construction site, and once there, an architectural feature was spotted that simply isn’t seen every day: a perfectly round, gaping hole in the southeast corner of the uppermost floor.

Snapping photos furiously, as if the mysterious chasm would disappear just as suddenly as it came into view, the story was already taking shape. “The small-but-elegant pool, sitting 29 stories above the Kennedy Expressway, with its stunning views of the Chicago skyline, will be a prime spot for viewing fireworks, sunrises, sunsets, and everything else high-rise Chicago living affords.”

One problem, though: It’s not a pool. Good thing we asked. What you see, you see, is actually part of a fire pit and entertainment area going on the top floor. Of course, that doesn’t change any other details of our inspired description. It is a spectacular location, and it will have spectacular views of Chicago. Just, you know, don’t try to dive into the fire pit and swim laps.

The fire pit, the real pool (on the 6th floor amenity terrace), and all the perks that come with The Parker will be available to tenants when they start moving in come June.

Among all that glorious new glass, crews work on the podium, where the real pool will be.
