Hyundai has taken the wraps off its Ioniq, its all-new entry that will be sold as a traditional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and an EV. We’ve also gotten our first technical details of the new green machine.

Sized roughly between the Elantra and Sonata, the four-door hatchback uses a dedicated platform. Hyundai boasts that the structure is 53 percent high-strength steel, with aluminum used for the hood, hatchback, and suspension components. The hybrid, which will be the first model on sale, used a lithium-polymer battery pack of unspecified capacity that is located under the rear seat. The engine, which is unique to this model, is a 1.6-liter direct-injected Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder making 104 horsepower and 108 lb-ft of torque. The permanent-magnet electric motor is good for 43 horsepower and 125 lb-ft. (No EV powertrain details or combined PHEV/hybrid power output has yet been announced.) Rather than a CVT, the hybrid’s output is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

We should learn more about the plug-in hybrid and EV versions of the Ioniq when the car makes its U.S. debut, which is expected at the New York auto show in March. Look for the hybrid version—and perhaps the plug-in as well—to go on sale by the end of the year, with the EV to follow after.
