Once upon a time students and young urban professionals rented cheap apartments with iffy plumbing, shaky security and invisible supers. A futon, milk crates and concrete blocks suspending 2x4s served as “furniture.”

Those days are long gone. A quick scan of the amenities at 30 East Balbo will show that millennials will get far more now than they would have in the eighties. We’ve learned a bit about this new apartment community that will be erected at East Balbo and South Wabash and completed by August 2017.

It’s conveniently located between seven different colleges and universities, so there’s a potential base of 26,000 students nearby.

Solomon Cordwell Buenz is designing the 16-story, 150,000 square foot development. It will have 134 apartment units and 255 beds. Another 8,000 square feet of retail space will be included at ground level.

The apartments will be completely furnished and be more like high-grade dorms, with a roommate matching service and individual by-the-bed lease options.

Each apartment will include private bedrooms and baths, washer/dryers and fully-equipped kitchens. There’s even a flat screen TV.

Building amenities will include a club room, café, tech hub, fitness center, lounges, game rooms, study rooms, and indoor bicycle storage. The outdoor space will offer terraces with gas grills, a fire pit, and large outdoor TV. Wi-Fi will naturally be available throughout the building.
